From Trash to Treasure!

In this blog post I will cover from start to finish the story of the leaded light which was rescued from a skip by our clients who I shall call Mr. & Mrs. White.

We made a traditional leaded light for Mr. & Mrs. White back in 2020. The design was to match the only remaining original leaded light on the landing window from the house next door. Mr & Mrs. White added a few extra elements they liked, and also chose the glass from our sample range. We then made a new timber frame and it was installed to replace a rather bland looking plastic window. See the photos below for before & After.

You may notice in the "before" picture, the original leaded light next door is visible. This was later to be thrown in a skip and rescued by our clients, Mr & Mrs. White. They brought us the leaded light still in its original frame, with only a couple of broken pieces. Kudos to the plastic window company for not completely obliterating it, as is usually the case.

The leaded light needed to be resized, so as to fit the frame to be made for the ground floor hallway window. A digital design was mocked up based on the preferences of Mr & Mrs. White.

We then set about amending the leaded light. This included repair work and additional glass to make up to the new size. See below.

The leaded light is now ready to be soldered, cemented, clean & polished. Once dry, it can be sent off for encapsulation into a 28mm toughened double glazed unit.

The timber frame was then made. We used hardwood (Sapele) for this. The frame was fully decorated prior to installation.

See below for the before & after photos.

Our frame installer (Chris) did a great job, as always. The clients were very pleased with their new window.

So if you spot a leaded light in a skip, save it! A home can always be found.
